The Western United States Pipe Band Association originally began in 1963 as the Pacific Coast Pipe Band Association, with two branches to cover the State of California. In the 1980s, the association expanded inland from the Pacific Coast, assuming its current name. Today, WUSPBA consists of four branches and over 50 bands with hundreds of solo pipers, drummers, and drum majors. WUSPBA is also proud to be participating in the Alliance of North American Pipe Band Associations (ANAPBA).

ADJUDICATION CLINIC DVD’S - NOW AVAILABLE
Last October WUSPBA had professional recordings made of the Ensemble, Piping and Drumming Adjudication Clinics which are required for the examinations taken by each adjudicator to obtain certification in each of three specialties; Ensemble Clinic Presented by Campbell Naismith, (1DVD, 1.5 hours running time, $7 plus $2 S&H), Piping Clinic Presented by Ken Sutherland, (2DVD, 3.3 hours running time, $10 plus $2 S&H) and Drumming Clinic Presented by Ed Best, (2DVD, 3.2 hours running time, $10 plus $2 S&H). Each DVD set includes the handouts from each clinic as well.

Each Clinic DVD covers its subject matter in great detail and as such is useful not only for adjudicator candidates, but for any solo or band competitor interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of these subjects to improve their solo and band performances. This is a unique educational opportunity for any serious student of piping and drumming.

Recent Announcements and Updates

05-20-2013 • Margo Naismith - Rest in peace

The WUSPBA Executive Committee wishes to extend condolences to the family and friends of Margo Naismith, who passed away last week on May 15. She was only 61. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March and underwent chemo treatment but it was too far advanced.

Margo was married to WUSPBA piping adjudicator Campbell Naismith and was the mother of Colin, also a piper. Margo was the highland dance teacher for the Academy of Highland Dance in San Diego.

A memorial service is in the planning stages.

Please keep the Naismith family in your thoughts and prayers. Campbell lost his mother, Irene, in January.

03-12-2013 • Southern Branch Re-Elections 

NOTICE:

Greetings

Because of irregularities found dealing with the Southern Branch elections that were not consistent with the Southern Branch Bylaws, The Executive Committee of the WUSPBA declares the Southern Branch elections invalid. Additionally, since all officers have expired terms, we declare the Southern Branch vacant at this time. A special meeting has been called for Saturday, May 25th, 2013 directly after Massed Bands at the Costa Mesa "United Scottish Society Highland Gathering. Details on the location can be found on the events page of the WUSPBA website.

03-05-2013 • Scotty Dean appointed as Treasurer

It is with with deep regret that I announce David Mackenzie's resignation as Treasurer of the WUSPBA due to family health concerns. David became a good friend and mentor to me. I appreciated all of the hard work and long hours he devoted to the Association. He will be missed. Scotty Dean has been appointed to serve the remainder of David Mackenzie's term as Treasurer. Scotty is not new to the Treasurer position as he served a few years ago very faithfully as Treasurer. Please join me in giving them our thanks and gratitude for their service.

03-03-2013 • Music Development of the Art and Performance Committee

I am very happy to announce the formation of the “Music Development of the Art and Performance Committee” or “MDAP”.  This committee will serve as a subcommittee of the Music Board and will receive direct oversight from Andy Trimble, Chair of the Music Board.  This Committee’s focus will be developing the art and performance of Pipers, Drummers, and Drum Sergeants through non-competitive projects and structured learning.

 Since we are doing well on the competitive side of our mission, this committee will work on the non-competitive side and will have oversight over some of the branch educational activities. 

 Eli Fugate and Ross Naismith have been appointed Co-Chairs of this committee along with Chris Bartholomeusz, Jamie Cuthill, Paul Gibson, Mike Postma, Charlie Rosenberger and Hamish Yuile. 

 I am excited to see what types of projects this committee will bring to the development side of WUSPBA.  I extend a warm welcome and congratulations to the MDAP Committee.

 I need to apologize to one of the contestants for missing their submission for the logo contest.  This was not intentional but an oversight on my part.  I went into panic mode when I realized it and it has now been fixed on the website.  So I doubled checked to make sure all of the entries are on there and we are re-starting the vote again. Because of this, the webmaster will reset the vote count. If you have already voted, please make sure to re-evaluate the the entire set of entries and cast your votes accordingly.

01-08-2013 • Announcing the WUSPBA 50th Anniversary Tune Composition Contest-

The Western United States Pipe Band Association is proud to announce our very first Tune Composition Contest! We are soliciting entries from January 7, 2013 until April 20, 2013. The winning entry will receive the title WUSPBA Golden Jubilee and the composer will receive $300. In addition, second and third prizes will be awarded $200 and $100 respectively. Entries can be any type of tune with at least two parts. If you would like to send a recording of the tune then feel free. The entries will be adjudicated by the combined efforts of the Executive Committee and the Music Board.
