Literally an oasis in the desert, the Las Vegas Celtic Festival was held next to the natural spring lake at Floyd Lamb State Park. Moving to a larger section of the park this year the games feature highland athletics and a main stage showcasing a variety of Celtic music groups from the tribal and bagpipe fusion of Wicked Tinkers to traditional Pipe Bands. Even Irish step dancers took the stage in their colorful costumes to do a high step. The usual fare of Scottish vendors and food stands lined the park and the pipe band competition took place by the lake.
Drum majors shared the main field with athletics for their contest. The athletes originally objected but after a major scuffle the drum majors forced the athletes into submission and took the field. Ha, not really! The athletes nicely let us compete during their break. The level of D/M play improves with each year and this contests flourishing is some of the most advanced this author has ever seen. The contest was great fun to watch.
On Saturday night the competing bands massed and paraded down the center of the Freemont Experience. After a performance with the LA Scots at the Experiences center stage they paraded back to the start of the Experience promenade and finished at Hennesees Pub the site of the evenings kitchen piping contest. If you have not been to the Vegas games, you’ve missed a great weekend!
